Counter-Literary

This is my first blog post, if you have any questions feel free to ask.

The topic for today is about genre, literary, and my personal taste and counter-literary fiction. For a long time I used to be a science fiction writer, specifically prefering to write near future spec fic. Not space travel, but rather new advances in psycho-therapy and other aspects that aren't necessarily to do benefit of recipiants. Though over time my fiction gradually became subtler, focusing more on speculative disorders and less on the technology itself. Until that eventually became closer to contemporary fiction with a very very slight technological bent.

Why I Hate "Strong Female Characters"

Like nonplussed and literally, the phrase “strong female character” has come to mean its antithesis. When people hear it they picture a full fleshed out woman with her own wants and desires. What they get is a woman in a mini skirt and thigh high boots that occasionally punches people.

But, and this is vital, that strong female character, cannot actually save the day. Her entire existence is for the main male hero. She may be spunky and sassy and is always met beating up some guys, but the second she teams up with MMH (main male hero) she abandons everything in her life to help him on his quest. Perhaps she manages to get captured and somehow fully forget how to fight allowing the MMH to do all the cool stuff while she sits around in a metal bikini.

Interchanging Poetry, A New Poetic Genre

Interchanging Poetry, A New Poetic Genre
By Mac McGovern

Poetry is the absolute beauty of the human heart expressing emotion in a form that delights, and leaves the reader with a feeling of contentment in one spectrum, and a feeling of remorse in another. No other form of writing has the ability and power to inspire the emotion created through poetry.

Verbal Penetration by Jessica Holter - Book Review

Verbal Penetration

A book about exploring black male and female sexuality. These poets in this book take you on a journey of eroticism. I got the book because it came on HBO a long time ago, and was intrigued to read more. If she still does these shows, I, for one, have put them on my bucket list to go and see.  This book has not just poetry but stories in it as...

You and I Alone by Melissa Topen

A story I really didn’t see coming. This love took place in a place that I didn’t think possible. It was really one of the reasons why this book was so hard to put down. The author took two different worlds, three really and started to merge them all together in one sexual tryst that will have you just constantly turning the pages of this next book. Take the owner of a very rich club and an exotic dancer that is very headstrong and mix them together. Well, you know what’s going to happen, but what you really want to know is how on this journey of lust.

Now there are two sides to this first character which made me more intrigued to read this book. One one side Anna is young girl who lost everything due to a knee injury in ballet and had to reshape her life without dancing. She is going to college and is focused on the realization that graduation is close. She is very set in her ways and knows that she doesn’t want anything to do with the word ‘relationship’. Both there is another side of her that very few know about except in this establishment.

Unequally Yoked by Sherry Lynn Snow - Book Review

Is not just a divine tale of an unequal marriage, but a lesson of letting the Lord come in and fix your marriage. This book is story of one woman’s obstacles when trying to make her walk with the Lord match the same in her husband while giving you steps and healing to its readers.  I liked this book not because it was a documentary, but because of it realness with the author. By talking about her own path and troubles, I feel she was really able to connect with readers who are having the same struggle and would be one of those books that I would give to not just couples who are going through it. I would suggest this to new couples as well so that they know and really look at each other and their own marriage.

The book starts off with these prayer request of couples really going through that those really start to paint the picture of what you are going to be reading. All of these couples have found their spouses not walking with God as they are and that that was causing trouble that needed heavy prayer.

Ask Me Again 2 by Theresa Hodge - Book Review

Just to clear the air, you have to read the first book before you can even understand what is going on is this second book. Alyssa and Drake, still more in love that ever and with a little bundle in tow, but not everything is what is seems. You also meet the best friends of these characters who you met in the first book in this series. This book is so steamy, I mean I thought I had read all there is when it came to the love Drake showed on Alyssa, but I was pretty wrong. Get ready to experience the old school loved mixed with a bit of new as you start to see other relationships form.

This book picks up just a few months after the first book and you have come across a very huge plot twist. You see the aftermath of everyone trying to cope with an weird situation. Alyssa and Drake are still going strong. Weston is still coping with the death of his ex-wife and comes across a young woman named Bernadette that shows him that he can love again. The plot was very smooth but the details are what pulled me.

Ask Me Again by Theresa Hodge - Book Review

So through the tragic loss of her best friend, Alyssa finds herself back in her hometown for her funeral where she meets her ex, Drake.  All I can say was, at this point I wanted to know what really happened. The first few pages you see what happened, but I go the feeling I didn’t get the whole story. Even though she had every reason to leave him, I mean I would have dipped out too. After the funeral, Drake is still feeling her despite her having this great life with another man in another state. You can almost tell that it never really ended.

Alyssa ends up going back to New York and her boyfriend with all of this guilt and life goes on as normal.  Drake isn’t feeling normal though because he is feeling Alyssa way too much despite her telling him that they couldn’t do this between them. It almost just felt normal for him to call her “Baby” and she didn’t object to it at all.  He was all trying to convince her that what they had was real and would always last and she was torn between two men.

The Elevator Scene - Chapter 2 of REVIVAL by M.K. Gilher

I hear a weird creaking noise and the lights flicker. I'm jostled about before the elevator jerks to a halt in mid-flight and the lights go out. My fellow elevator patrons gasp and grumble. Random lights appear as people pull out their cellphones. In the commotion of the crowded elevator, I'm heaved back onto my Italian-shoed stranger even more. I feel strong hands wrap around my hips. I'm so close I can feel his chest rising and falling on my back.

Oh. Sweet. Jesus.

Rock City 2 by Kaliyah Knight - Book Review

We come back to the streets of the H and its dirtier than ever. You get introduced to the veterans of this game and are given a more in depth look at some character that were in Rock City One, but didn't play that huge of role. When I started reading this, I was straight confused because it shows you one scene and then takes me back to the present day. I must say, this book was so good that I couldn't wait to get in the third Rock City. But before you do, take a look at this second because there will be twist and turns in here that you didn't see coming.

Of course, we go to the main character Rockwell and to my shock and amazement, she wasn't with Rico. In fact, she wasn't even looking at Rico like that anymore. Issac was still in the picture as Rockwell was dating him exclusively. Rockwell is making a relationship work with Issac at the start of this story in part of Rico going ghost for months. She is also managed to get into fashion school and do what she loves most.

Beautee and the Beast by Cali - Book Review

This book has given me everything that I have craved. Suspense, secrets, drama, love, and from all points I absolutely could not put this book down. I finished it one day and that is a feat that I haven't done in a long while. The book starts off with you having no idea what is happening and then from there you are taken for a whirlwind of a ride.  You meet a young lady named Beautee Hill and to me, she served as a triple threat. She was married to thug herself that no one knew of. Still a virgin which meant she was faithful to a point and she was a federal agent, but not your normal federal agent. Underneath her skin, she held revenge and contempt for one man and his name was Zaire. The one man who put her husband behind bars in the first place. Beautee start on this path of redemption and revenge by being the finest thing on the planet in Zaire's eyes.  No knowing who she is, Zaire enters the scene and hooked on her from day one and even though she doesn't want to say it out loud, after a few pages she is starting to feel him too.

Spiritwood by George Wise - Book Review

This book gave me those goosebumps all up and down my arm while reading this book. But the funny thing is that, it was one of those books that once you started to pick up on the story line you did not want to put it down. I got to say it was creepy, scary, crazy good, but just to be honest not a book that I would pick up again. Every character in this book was connected to a forest and an ancient indian story contained within. It takes you a minute to connect the dots and the authors gives you very provocative scenes that will have you putting this book down at the same time picking it up just to get more.

The first character you meet is Jed and his vibe was very hard to read. He is an prominent artist who makes huge reset in his life by buying an house in Spiritwood to get in touch with his artistic roots. From here, you start to learn of all the characters and you see how they all become connected in this quaint little town. Janet is young woman who is very frail and in a marriage that had me feeling sorry for her.   Henry was the one person who was creepy to me but kept me guessing.

Shadows at Stormclyffe Hall By Lauren Smith - Book Review

First off this house is seriously creepy it has a very dark history about a family that lived there.  I give the authors kudos for that because I was creeped out, the minute I read that she fell off that cliff.  The story centers around the mystery of Isabella and Richard the lovers who lives were ended very abruptly and no idea why it happened.

Jane is a young women who is looking to her dissertation on a creepy house that is owned by Bastian You learn of Jane after all the creepiness and find that she is hooked to finding out the past behind the Hall.  This is where you learn of Bastian and that this lovely mansion is being renovated by him.  He is the owner of this place and also the reputation that his family has placed inside its walls. Jane gets a letter saying that she can come and visit as a tourist but she is determined to get access to documents that could make her paper the bomb.com.

Sinful Secrets By M'hogany - Book Review

Secrets? Yes there are tons of them throughout the book that I like to call an error in miscommunication, but the sinful part is where you completely lose me.  The way I saw it there was only one sinful person in this story and he just got beneath my skin because his secret was the reason that everything and everyone around them was affected.  In this story the book centers around a young woman named Symone who I saw, had a good life, a nice family, and long term goal that is starting to become fulfilled.  She even finds the need to help out a friend and I found that this woman had everything she wanted except she had a hidden desire, a hidden voice that took the help of her friends to find.
