Death to Our Future

In 1950, two million was the count for people housed in the city of Philadelphia. Since then, that number has done nothing but decrease due to the ploys used to keep the numbers beneath a particular quota. The Black Community, give the city a 44.3 percentage rate out of 100 according to the United States Census Bureau of 2012, which means that 55.7 percent are of other races (Latino, Caucasian, Asian, Korean, etc.). That does not include the folks who chose not to participate in the census, or the people who provide shelter to family and friends. The two, would give the Black Community a percentage rate well over the fifty mark it’s been kept under. Blacks possess a multitude of threats and must be contained and controlled by any means necessary. For one, if we are allowed to continue to reproduce in the numbers in which we do today then the American Government will eventually have to do something about that. The population would be enormous and who would have the power to control a misdirected and deceived people in numbers surpassing the two million mark, in one city? The higher power (I do not speak of God) finally came up with a solution and did something about it in 1985.

The creation, of the opportunity to get rich quick and obtain the finer things in life is one of the most brilliant ideas to ever come to the mind of man. Not only was the idea brilliant, it’s effective and has been for almost forty years. An average of 200 plus black men, women and children die annually from gun violence alone in Philadelphia. Last year the city recorded 329 murders, as of December 2, we are at 225 murders for this year (2013). City officials will tell you that this is a good thing to have a low number such as this year’s murder rate. But how is that good when in two years our city suffered the lost of over 600 family members and/or friends. Now take a minute to think about how populated the city would be without these violent acts that end in fatalities. The city would be populated with African Americans who would no longer be the poverty party but the rulers of a place they consider to be home. Illegal justice was necessary and murder became the answer to prevent this from ever occurring. This solution is what folks including myself call, genocide. The consequences for murder or any crime in Philadelphia depends on the victim and/or the violator. I wonder why that is?

Talent Without Skill

At one point in time I kind of thought talent and skill were equal to one another, but as I've grown I now understand the difference between the two. Talent to many folks means the behaviors you find yourself doing often or repetitiously, a recurring pattern of thought or feeling that can be applied productively. I personally disagree with that because I believe those are skills used to perfect the talent you possess. They are a few of the tools used to make the cliche' "practice makes perfect" a fact and not just some saying. Another definition for talent is what you are and are good at, an innate ability as for artistic accomplishments. Now that, I do believe has talent written all over it. Talent to me means your capabilities and ability to perform what you have spent so much of your time polishing. It is the dream we believe will take us from one point to the next, reaching that level of success.

This is like faith without works. Talent comes and goes to many folks. It’s like the saying “If you don’t use it you’ll lose it”. Talent could be a number of things. Singing, carpentry, sports, acting, painting, dancing, the list goes on. However, they are all dead without skill, they’re nothing, useless. Imagine hiring a contractor to build you a home from the ground up. He gets the blueprint but reads it wrong and therefore builds it incorrect. He has the talent to be a contractor but lacks the skill of a contractor. Skill is the hard work and long hours you spend studying, grooming, and shaping what it is you know how to do. Again, skill is the practice in the cliché “practice makes perfect”. It’s what we do over and over again until we get it right and know that it’s right.

Schettino’s Failure of Leadership

Several years ago while taking a class onmanagement styles, a question came up that made a powerful impact on how I interacted with people around me. The question was this; Is management and leadership the same thing? On one hand, management is the process of dealing with or controlling things or people. While leadership is the action of leading people by precept, principle and example. Like me, you may have never thought of these two states separately, but as you look at the definitions, it is clear they are not the same.

I say it like this, management is getting people to do the right things, but leadership is helping the right people do the right things. The difference is found in the application and activation of people. In life, business and everything else, people must be part of the equation. If they are not, you won’t see sustained success. This difference came to light in a tragic manner for hundreds of passengers earlier in January.

Black History Month: Celebrating Unity Destroying Divide

Originally started as Negro History Week in 1926 by Carter Godwin Woodson, Black History Month evolved as a means to celebrate the many contributions African Americans have made to their communities and the greater good of society as a whole. 1976 would mark the time when the celebration as mainstream would come to know it would obtain it's tradition of being celebrated each year in the month of February. This was done to commemorate the life of abolitionist Frederick Douglass and Emancipation Proclamation writer Abraham Lincoln who were both born during the month of love.

So with such great history behind the tradition, why has it adorned a reputation of creating divide among it's opposers? What is it's relevance to those proponents who believe in it's significance? Is it as releveant today as it has been in the past? Why or why not? What about the decision to celebrate during the month of February, is it justified or is it falling short of that which it was intended? Is enough being done to encourage the youth and even the elders of today to acknowledge the great contributions of those names both small and great who came before them paving the way for their future? Is there more that can be done to promote unity and destroy divide surrounding the celebration and all year round?
